There really is a first time for everything. I’m sure we all can remember our first time doing many things that have etched great memories in our minds, one of those being our first camping experience. For some, it might be the sight of the sunset, the smell of the campfire, or the taste of a perfectly toasted marshmallow on a s’mores sandwich that evokes a memory. For others it could be an activity, or sharing a memorable moment with friends and loved ones. For the kids visiting from Colombia this year as part of Kidsave Summer Miracles program, each child will experience their first time camping this Tuesday, July 21st at The Holidays Camp Community in San Clemente, California. These children will enjoy their first campfire and camping experience where they will take in the sights, smells, tastes, and joy of camping for their first time.
In 2011, my wife and I had a “first” of our own. We were able to meet one of these amazingly brave children through Kidsave’s Summer Miracles program who we adopted and is now a part of our family. She joined our family at the age of 13; it is never too late. At the time we had an 8 month old daughter and a 2 year old son. Now, the ages are 3, 5 and 16 and it has been a wonderful experience to bring a child without a family into ours and to demonstrate that loving families do exist. This year we are hosting Yarledy, age 13, one of this year’s Summer Miracles kids. Until July 4th, Yarledy had never swam in a pool. It was obvious she liked it as her first swim was 6 hours long! Other firsts for Yarledy besides the food, has been an introduction to the ocean. Since she arrived here, she has become a lover of the ocean while learning how to paddleboard and even surf! All of these first experiences will be lifelong memories for her, as will her upcoming camping experience. Yarledy, along with the four other children visiting Southern California from Colombia this month are looking forward to this camping adventure.
The children, who are all growing up in foster care, have traveled to the United States all the way from Colombia to experience life in an American family, learn about our culture and our language, and most importantly to meet and spend time with prospective adoptive families.
This will be a fantastic event to be a part of where we can see the children enjoy the lifestyle that many of us grew up experiencing. For these five orphans from Colombia who have never had this opportunity, this will be a first time experience of camping under the stars and falling asleep to the sound of the ocean.
This wonderful opportunity is being generously sponsored by The Holidays Camp Community.
